Griffin
Now part of the Beacon Bluff redevelopment project, the former Griffin Wheelworks site is approximately 9.4 acres in size and is bounded by the new Phalen Boulevard, Johnson Parkway, Atlantic Street and railroad tracks on Saint Paul’s East Side. The century-old Baldinger Bakery is planning to break ground this spring on a new $30 million baking facility on the site.
The Griffin site was home to various heavy industries since the mid-1800’s, many of which housed foundries. The wheelworks company itself operated at the site from 1896-1964 and was demolished in 1965.
Debris from the demolition was pushed into a creek bed that ran through the site, along with thousands of cubic yards of foundry sand and foundry slag from their operations. It has remained vacant and undeveloped since then.
The Port Authority negotiated the purchase of the site in early 2007. Cleanup was completed summer 2008. Centrally located and with convenient interstate highway access, Griffin is an ideal site for expansion-minded businesses looking to take advantage of the booming economic engine that is the Phalen Corridor.
