The reporter/staff writer is a member of the Office of Communications. Primary duties are to report and write news stories, news and trend analysis, feature stories, news briefs and other stories as assigned for The Catholic Spirit newspaper and TCS online. Reports to TCS editor-in-chief/publications manager and works closely with the news editor.
Must have excellent skills in news writing, including knowledge of AP and Catholic News Service style, and to report stories accurately and thoroughly and meet deadlines. Must be able to multi-task multiple simultaneous assignments and identify how to prioritize within such a workload. Must be able to produce both quick-turn stories and long-form journalism. Collaborates with the team, generates story ideas, generates sources, provides photo assignments for stories to the photographer, and helps with production where needed. Production duties may include copy editing, proofreading, layout ideas and final page reading.
Multimedia storytelling, news photography and video experience or willingness to learn is desired. Expected to use social media for storytelling and promoting stories and for generating ideas. Knowledge of the Catholic Church is preferred; a willingness to learn is essential. A willingness to build relationships with Catholic sources, including leaders and lay faithful, is essential.
Requirements include a BA degree in journalism or related field or equivalent experience; at least 5 years experience in print journalism; proven excellence in writing and reporting; flexibility to work evenings and weekends; reliable personal transportation and willingness to travel around archdiocese for assignments; willingness to work regularly from The Catholic Spirit’s office at 777 Forest St. in St. Paul.
