Job Description

Responsible for the direction, supervision, coordination, safe and efficient operation of the Raw Materials Department of the St. Paul Mill.  Ensure acquisition, safe production, and inventory control of raw materials as established schedules, at minimum cost, and at a quality to assure conformance with Company specifications and requirements.  Supervise the safe shredding and shearing of unprocessed scrap on a production basis.  Oversees scale operation and office procedures for the Scrap Processing facility. This position is responsible for coordinating the timely repair of railroad tracks and rail cars that belong to Gerdau. The Shredder Operations Manager is responsible for the safety of his reporting personnel.  Formal safety audits will be conducted.

The Shredder Operations Manager reports to the General Manager/VP of the location. The incumbent supervises a staff of one salaried exempt, one salaried non-exempt and 17 hourly and maintenance personnel. The Shredder Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the activities of scheduling, as well as training, testing and auditing of shredder yard personnel, to include the equipment operators, production, and maintenance employees.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Provide full support for the implementation and management of the Safety In Action system.
  2. Participate in all accident and incident investigations in area of responsibility.
  3. Conduct routine safety activities including inspection tours, employee contacts and visibility tours.
  4. Ensure that safety rules and requirements are being followed in all work areas.
  5. Ensure that work rules are posted in all work areas.
  6. Maintain compliance with visual management standards.
  7. Receive, inspect and shred scrap to the melt shop in a timely and cost efficient manner.
  8. Assist in establishing maintenance, production, safety, and quality cost goals.
  9. Responsible for initiating, writing, training, and auditing personnel on procedures for the scrap area.
  10. Responsible for scheduling of personnel, work hours reported by the people, and documentation of any oral or written disciplinary action required.
  11. Assist in establishing standard scrap processing practices for control of production methods, quality, labor and cost for the shredder.
  12. Responsible for the scrap inspection process.
  13. Responsible for compliance with all federal and state regulations relative to the department environmental practices.
  14. Requisition operating parts and supplies to ensure availability of the proper quantity and quality when needed.
  15. Responsible for safety of employees and for effectively administering safety programs.
  16. Responsible for departmental housekeeping and 5S.
  17. Responsible for resolving employee grievances.
  18. Responsible for supervising personnel effectively to minimize turnover.
  19. Responsible for administering corporate, plant, and departmental personnel policies and programs.
  20. Responsible for employee selection, training, evaluation, and discipline.
  21. Responsible for actively supporting and participating in Shredder Operations teambuilding efforts.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President / General Manager.
The Individual
  • Bachelor’s degree in a job related major plus 3 or more years of related work experience, OR 7 years related experience with High School Diploma or GED.
  • Basic supervisor skills, mechanical aptitude and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of stationary and mobile equipment used in scrap handling and preparation.
  • Knowledge of the different types of steel scrap that is charged into the furnace and the quality requirements in order to make quality finished products.
